28 September 2015 is World Rabies Day

22 September 2015

This is a reminder that once again World Rabies Day (WRD) will take place on the 28 of September, the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur who collaborated in developing the first efficacious rabies vaccine.

Rabies is one of the most deadly zoonoses killing up to 70 000 people worldwide per year. The majority of these are children in developing countries.

The aim of WRD is to raise awareness of rabies and to promote activities in at-risk communities and to show a global determination to bring an end to rabies.

The first World Rabies Day (WRD) was organized in 2007, and was sponsored by the World Health Organisation, the World Organisation for Animal Health and the Pan American Health Organisation.

Further details on how you can support the campaign can be found at the website of the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC).

In addition the Northern European Conference on Travel Medicine for 2016, is raising money for the work of the GARC through participation in sporting events over the coming year.

The first Team-NECTM6 event was The Great Scottish Swim, at Loch Lomond, on Saturday 29th August 2015. The second event was The Thames Path Challenge, in London, on 12-13 September 2015. To make a donation or sponsor the team go to our JustGiving page.

WRD is a reminder to healthcare professionals that rabies risk is a topic that should be discussed in many travel consultations. The rabies record on TRAVAX contains comprehensive information on the subject including risk information, guidance, post-exposure treatment at rabies FAQs.
